I've had a phone call from a fellow flying boat researcher who tells me that Capt Hodgkinson died peacefully towards the end of November.

One of the great flying boat pilots, he was probably one of very few left who had flown an Empire boat, he flew extensively with the RAAF during the war and with BOAC postwar.

I had the good fortune to meet him a little while ago and share some of the memories of the good days - and the bad - of flying boat operations.

The Poole Flying Boat Celebration tells me he may have been the last of the line of Poole-based flying boat captains.

Sad news. Blue skies my friend.

Apparently there is an account of a prang VH had in a Sunderland at Pembroke Dock on April 28, 1941 in the August 2005 issue of [i]Aeroplane[/] (possibly 2006). Anyone got that issue in their collection?
