The XP2M-1 was essentially a near copy of the earlier PY-1 with some changes incorporated by Martin engineers. The major difference initially was the addition of a third engine on top of the wing.
Testing revealed that the weight and drag was not offset by increased performance and the third engine was removed. The model still suffered from shortcomings in performance. The aircraft
eventually was modified into the XP2Y-2 but lost the contract to the Consolidated P2Y-1
