Savoia S.21 Schneider trophy rc-model

This is the place to discuss and ultimately show-off all aspects of constructing and actually flying your radio-control flying boat models. Pictures of construction, materials used, finishing and action shots of them flying, are very welcome.

Savoia S.21 Schneider trophy rc-model

Hi all,

here:
http://www.rc-wasserflieger.at/forum/th ... d=498&sid=
I have begun to post a build-thread of a small (1,3m span) Savoia rc-model, which will appear in short-kit-form, provided the prototypes fly well.
The model is all-wood, except the glassfibre-engine nacelle and carbon-tube-spars in the wings.

Regards,
Rene

I love the shape of that plane, and a few others with similar overall appearance such as the Sea Lion. I stared at the S.21 and a few other similar Savoias for hours, debating build subjects. I'll have to follow your thread.

Hi Bill,

thanks for your kind words.
I will certainly complete the construction during the next weeks, so you can see how it will work out.
Momentary I am working at the nacelle-plug, making the parting-board tomorrow. Push thumbs I can part the mould after all (I have added panel lines and the cutout-holes to the plug for easier handling with the glass-fibre-nacelle).

Regards, and Merry Christmas,
Rene

Hi all,

my Savoia has performed her maiden flight in the meantime. The model flies very well, without bad habits (as far as I can tell after 3 flights).

Please enjoy the pictures.

Hi Bryan,

oh, I see, I forgot to mention that the video don't show my model, but that of my friend Martin Steger. He built the second prototype tohave a second thought and to see if a skilled modeller is able to understand my principles of building. Some others had very different means of how I usually construct/build...
You can see pictures of my model some posts earlier. Unfortunately none of my flying buddies have a videocamera on hand. But I hope to get a good video soon, as at the first-of-may-weekend we have a big waterplane meeting in Plau am See, where Martin and me want to fly together, or maybe a nice race.

Regards,
Rene

Hi Rene,

Better than the real aircraft! If Conflenti had designed and built the S-21 to that standard it would have won the 1921 Schneider by miles.

Cheers

Hi Ralph,

thanks alot for that compliment1

But I believe the real plane just had a bunch of bad luck, that prevented the engine from starting at the right moment. The Conflenti design is superb. The model flies fool-proof, so the Original should have done so too.
Even our simple brushless-motors fail in the heat of a race: a friend burned 2 motors in 2 years. He now orders my selfbuild hardcore motors ;)
