Kawanishi H8K2 "Emily" Flying Boat

This is the place to discuss and ultimately show-off all aspects of constructing and actually flying your radio-control flying boat models. Pictures of construction, materials used, finishing and action shots of them flying, are very welcome.

Kawanishi H8K2 "Emily" Flying Boat

Postby neons » Wed Apr 27, 2011 12:21 am

I have started to build a Kawanishi H8k2 Emily flying boat with a mixture of plywood, balsa, foam, and epoxy. It will be basically a standoff scale plane. The size is 8 foot wingspan and a 6 foot fuselage. It will have an all electric system. It is mostly being built with a large block of jetsam foam from a floating dock that washed up on a nearby beach. The plans were very graciously made available for anyone that would like to make the plane. A Canadian from Nova Scotia spent a large amount of time dawing the plane out and was willing to let me post the Pdf high resolution copy of the plan. His only request was that if anyone downloads the plan that they do not sell them anywhere or commecialize them. That is his wishes. Very generous of him.

I will not be able to post my build log here as it will be hard to maintain 2 different forums on building the plane. I am going to leave the link here for anyone reading this to follow to my build log. You will find the plans there for download also. I will use this Forum for information on the Emily in the meantime. When the plane has any major parts of info building the plane I will leave some pictures here.

Feel free to ask any questions as I can answer those as I go along.

Here is the site with the videos of the outdoors runnup of the motors and controls. The plane is all electric and with 100 inch wing and 78 inch fuselage. It is around 16.5 lbs ready to fly. All electric power system.

After all the work going into the model creation I finally did the maiden today after 2 failed tries. I had to install beefier motors and it was all run off without a hitch. I can say it is complete now.

Well hello again,
One week to go to the Annual Floatfly. I had a real good flight trying to get the plane trimmed out for the coming FloatFly Event. During my second flight the plane was shot down over the pond about 300meters altitude and dove in causing a lot of damages. The fuselage was broken in half nbehind the wing and the wing center section between seperate engines cracked across the wing in 2 spots. One half of the levator broke off. I had a large hole in the nose sector on one side. Numerous other problems also. The radio signal that interfered with my flight signal was somewhere nearby. Now I had 7 days to get this damage all repaired and ready for the FloatFly. It was a disaster. I worked long days into the night getting all the parts repaired and installed carbon fiber wing spars to take the loading. All the plane was repainted. I finished the whole plane late night just before the flight. It was a marathon build. It would have to be a total remaiden at the flight event. The video below shows the plane looking all done in pristine condition being flight checked and off it went to the unknown.

I finally was able to debut my plane at our 3rd Annual Nicolaci FloatFly here in the USA. It was a very well recieved model to all the patrons of the Event. I pieced together a video of some of the good flight passes around the pond. I think you may enjoy seeing this plane in flight here. This is a page from my build log. Look further down the page for the video and pictures.
