Ok, American, yes, and looking at it again it is very remiscent in layout of another type; the Martin Mariner.
Is this the one that the Americans did the same as we eventuallly did and built a scale 'model' to fly before production to test out the aerodynamics/hydronamics which would make this the Martin 162A Tadpole Clipper ?
