95 Squadron

Hello List,
I'm a new boy on the block looking for any information on 95 Squadron RAF which was based in Sierra Leone during WW11. My brother served with 95 before being transfered to 53 Squadron, and I am trying to trace his service record using his logbook. While there is quite a lot of information on other Squadrons based in West Africa, 95 seems to be left out in the cold.
Anything related to personel of 95 would be much appreciated.
regards
Mike Smith

Hello Richard,
Thanks for the reply. I have visited the sites you mention, with the exception of you tube, will try that later. The 95 Squadron site seems very thin on events post 1943,and as my brother served from October 1941 to October 1942 before being transfered, this is a little frustrating.
However,thanks again for your reply.
Regards
Mike

Hi,

I have been going through a similar exercise with RNZAF 490 Squadron which was also based at Jui. My dad flew with it. I got on to the Operations record Book at National Archives, Kew and also the Squadron Record Book which is in National Archives in Wellington New Zealand.

There are some references to 95 in Chaz Bowyer's book, The Short Sunderland.

If in the course of your research you come up with anything on 490 please let me know.

Hello,
Have got Bowyers Sunderland at War but don't know of his book the Short Sunderland. Have you read his book,Men of Coastal Command 1939-45?
In passing you mention the Squadrons ORB's ,what sort of charge was involved.Last time I looked it was quite expensive. What was your fathers name,so I can keep a look out for him?
regards
Mike

yes getting access to the Kew records wasn't a cheap exercise [I used a searcher who is a link on the Kew website] - but a lot less expensive that flying from New Zealand.

You can get into the nitty gritty a bit at Kew on the www and locate the files but can't actually search them.

Let me know if you want the 95 sqd extracts from the book - I can scan & e mail.

My Dad was Leonard Joseph Webb - he was with 490 in Jui from Feb to September 1944
