Scalaria Air Challenge, Wolfgangsee July 2013

'Makemyday' asked on the Catalina part of this site if G-PBYA was attending Scalaria this year. At the time, we were not booked but it now appears that we have been! Current plan is that we will be flying into Salzburg from the Czech Republic (where we will have been for several days of water-based filming) on Thursday 12th July then flying out to the lake at St Wolfgang on Friday morning. We will leave Salzburg for our Duxford base on Sunday 15th. For anyone not familiar with the Air Challenge, take a look at the video made up of clips from several years at http://www.airchallenge.com In addition to the myriad small seaplanes, there is usually a 'heavy' - this will be G-PBYA's fourth visit, PH-PBY has been (once I think although I may be wrong) and the Do-24ATT has been several times in the past and is the centrepiece when it does go although it missed some years because of Philippine registry issues. If the weather is good, then the event is amazing, particularly the evening display on the Saturday night. It is a actually a big private party but there are public vantage points around the lake.

Hi David,

I wish I could have the time off for the event but I can't, darn it!

Trust you'll have a fabulous time.

It looks as if we will now be flying to Salzburg direct from the UK on the Thursday. The planned water ops filming in the Czech Republic is off for the time being as the lake is full of debris from the recent flooding in that part of the world.

Speaking of which, G-PBY flew low right over my back garden on Saturday afternoon - what a lovely sound she makes......

Well the 2013 Scalaria Air Challenge has been and gone. The weather was amazing and the venue was great as usual although there may perhaps have been fewer seaplanes than in previous years? Catalina G-PBYA attended from Duxford with each transit being just shy of five hours. We went onto the lake a number of times, moored to our buoy four times and stayed on the water overnight on the Saturday. Having done it twice now, I have to say that doing buoy drift duty overnight is not my favourite experience but having three on board to share the load does at least make it more fun! Our highlight was probably carrying out a formation 'display' with the Dornier Do-24ATT over the Wolfgangsee. Some photos...

A nice Polish registered Beaver that I had not seen before. It was very active during the event, sometimes in company with the well-known LN-NCC

Great Pictures, David. Now does anyone have any of the two big boats in formation. Post please.

David, please post any that someone might send to you.
