Looks like it was based on a McKinnon to start with.

The 1st rule in operating an amphibious airplane is CHECK YOUR LANDING GEAR, the 2nd rule is CHECK YOUR HULL PLUGS.
He didn't follow rule #2 and almost made it back to the beach before .......
