These 6 aircraft are also listed below in the list of Widgeon aircraft that have been/or are registered in Canada.

I did not copy word for word from the book, "The Grumman Amphibians" by Fred J. Knight and Colin R. Smith but just kinda followed the life of the Grumman G-44 / G-44A / Scan Type 30 Widgeons registered in Canada and what happened to them and where they are now.

I started at the beginning of the c/n numbers, that's right, they were called construction numbers, not serial numbers but to simplify it, I will call them s/n's since most refer and call them serial numbers.

Dates are: (Year) (Month) (Day)

Well I lied!! the above is copied in its entirety and I did it to show all what is shown in the book and to let you see how some of these aircraft are sold and resold and resold etc. If you count the owners you should come up with (22) with s/n 1210. I also copied the next one (s/n 1213) in its entirety again to let you see how some of these aircraft flew from owner to owner to owner etc. etc. If you count them up it should be 29 different owners. In both these two aircraft there are some owners that are what I call "flippers", a flipper is a person/company, let's call him/it "B". Ok, B hears that A has an aircraft for sale, he also known that C is looking for an aircraft like A has. He buys the aircraft from A and (of course) marks it up and sells it to C. Hey! its called free enterprise.

On 1956-05-22 the aircraft took off on a non-scheduled flight from Kemano, B.C. to Kitimat, B.C. with the pilot and two passengers. Before take-off at Kemano the pilot had been requested to look out for a missing man who might have been on a beach between Dorothy Island and Hopkins Point. The aircraft was observed in the vicinity of Dorothy Island, apparently making the search as requested, and when last seen was heading North over Hopkins Point. When the aircraft failed to arrive at Kitimat a search was begun. The wreckage was found about 8hrs later submerged in 35 feet of water, about 100yds., from the West shore of Eagle Bay, B. C. The pilot, Victor Deeks 28 and the two passengers, Angus Landcaster Chalmers 43 and Harold C. Casey 34 were dead and the aircraft destroyed. The wreckage was salvaged but the starboard wing and engine were not found. Both the rudder trim tab indicator and the trim tab were set for full left rudder, perhaps indicating a loss of power on the starboard engine. The undercarriage was locked down, but no evidence of malfunction could be found in the aircraft and engine controls. Cancelled from CCAR: 1956-06-18.

Re: Canadian G44, G44A, & SCAN-30 Widgeons

Postby MrWidgeon » Wed Apr 14, 2021 7:38 am

Now you're wading my pool, LOL. I helped Fred on this book for several years, mostly with the McDermott Widgeons, but many others and any other airplanes I could.
N.B.: The engines involved with the Widgeon are the original Ranger (200hp), Lycoming GO-435-C2B (260hp), GO-480-B1D series (270hp), GO-480-G1D6 (295hp), TIO/LTIO-540-J2BD (300hp), GTSIO-540 (350hp) and the R-680 radial (300hp). The GO-435, Go-480s were used on the Link/Lockheed and McKinnon Conversions plus one or two one off conversions. The R-680 Radial was only used on the Mansdorf/PACE Gannet. Continental engines used were the O-470 240hp, IO-470-B/D/M series (260hp) and the IO-520-E (300hp).
I know a number of these airplanes first hand, either saw them as a kid, rode in them, knew the owners, worked on them or some combination of the all of that.

1240 CF-BVN was the first Widgeon sold outside the US.
1265 N99431 may be valid, but is in pieces and it no longer has the McKinnon conversion or Coast Guard door, it now has a McDermott conversion, a conventional door and is for sale.
1299 N299CN was removed from the museum a year or so ago and was supposed to heading for a restoration facility.
1311 has the same owner, but is now registered as C6-EAU in the Bahamas.
1431 has the same owner, but he hasn't done any work on restoring the airplane since he bought it, it sits disassembled in his garage/hangar and it's not for sale. He still has plans .......
#26 Mr. Larrance passed away several years ago and it passed to his wife, I don't know if the owner is her or a son, at any rate the airplane is a wreck, most of a fuselage from the wheel wells aft, wing center section, maybe the tail. I have a few photos of it, not worth much but parts.
#28 is owned by a good friend and is under rebuild from the wheels forward.

Once again, a lot of info and another Well Done !

(Just for fun a list of the ones you listed I've had a hand on.)
1473 Rode in this one a couple times as N244BR in Seattle.
1441 sort of, I've never laid eyes on it, but I've been helping with info and contacts.
1437 one that I rode in as a kid when Gulf had it in New Orleans.
1334 rode this one from Seattle to Spokane as N90727.
1327 helped do an annual on it in Seattle as N79906.
1324 rode in this a couple times as N176MS in Seattle.
1293 sort of, I've never laid eyes on it, but I've been helping with info and contacts.
1230 owned by a late friend in Seattle, helped move it a couple times as N1AS.
Not bad for a short list. I've ridden in 14 different Widgeons, flown 8 of those, helped work on maybe 8 or 9 others and helped rebuild 2.

There is no such thing as a "GTSIO-540" engine. The Lycoming TIO/LTIO-540-J2BD (with a "D" = dual mag and also the -J2B with 2 standard mags) engines are nominally rated at 350 hp, but apparently (so I have heard) de-rated to 300 hp for use in the Magnum conversion on the Widgeon. According to Burke Mees, the "de-rating" process was simply to put a lower redline on the Widgeon's Manifold Pressure gauge, but the throttles can still physically push them to a higher level of boost (IIRC the original redline on a Navajo Chieftain is 48 inches for 350 hp.)

"GTSIO" is the format/designation used by Continental Motors for its geared 520 CID series engines such as the ones used on Cessna 421 Golden Eagles (GTSIO-520-C = 340 hp w/o intercooler and GTSIO-520-L and -N = 375 hp with intercoolers) and the Aero Commander 685 Grand Commander (GTSIO-520-K = 435 hp.)

The comparable Lycoming designation for a geared, turbo(super)charged, injected, opposed engine was "TIGO" for turbocharged, injected, geared, opposed and it was used in conjunction with the TIGO-541 series engines such as used on the Piper P-Navajo (pressurized.) Previously, Lycoming also used to have their GSO and IGSO series of 480 and 540 cid engines. They were used on T-Bones and Queen Airs, old "bathtub" nacelle Aero Commanders, etc. The 480 cid geared, supercharged engines were rated at 340 hp and the 540's at 380 hp. And in point of fact, all Lycoming 540 series and 541 series engines were actually 541.5 cubic inches of displacement.

Hi Dave,

I just checked out your most recent post here on Seawings back in August of 2021 and in the discussion, you mentioned Burke Mees. So.....obviously you know this gentleman. Burke has recently (on Nov. 6th) contacted me to inquire if I have any information on the use of the turbine-powered gooses in SE Alaska. Burke is supposed to get back to me when he returns to Anchorage after some trip he is on. Anyway, I told him in an email reply that the only information I might have would come from the PowerPoint presentation you sent me long ago. So.....I need to know from you whether or not you approve of Burke using any information from the PP. Best to let me know via my email address......hootysdad@gmail.com

Thanks...... And.....another note. In recent years I have gotten big-time involved with RC airplane building and flying. I have a very elaborate kit I purchased last spring of the Grumman Goose from a company in the Netherlands that I will be starting on soon. It's an amazing kit and I will probably use the color scheme of one of the old BLM gooses I'm thinking.

Hope everything is going well with you and your life. I turned 80 on my last birthday and am still hanging in there.
