New video of old Goose on YouTube

Laurie Yonge, Jr.'s N1019N (ex-USN JRF-5 s/n B-30, BuAer. 37777) downwind to final and roll-out at Leeward Air Ranch near Ocala, FL. It's been a few years since I last talked to Laurie - and he was pushing 80 back then. Looks like he's still got the touch as far as this Goose is concerned.

But contrary to the caption on the YouTube video, my records indicate that it was not built in 1942 but rather in December 1943.

Regardless of little details like that, I sure wish there was more to it. Love to see these old birds still flying! :D

Built Dec. 1943 as Grumman OEM s/n B-30, US Navy model JRF-5 Bu. 37777;
Surplused as N1019N Tony Schwamm, Seattle, WA 1945;
Ellis Airlines, Ketchikan, AK Nov. 1946;
Alaska Coastal-Ellis Airlines 1962;
Alaska Airlines 1968;
Coast Air, Ketchikan, AK 1972;
Laurie Yonge, Jr. Ocala, FL 1975-present

Note: the "official" FAA registration for N1019N has it as having been manufactured in 1946, but that too is wrong.

The very first G-21 Goose, NC16910, s/n 1001, was completed in May 1937 and the very last one, a US Navy JRF-5, OEM s/n B-145, which was last registered in Canada as C-FUMG (aka "Ugly Mother Goose") was completed in August 1945, and contracts for another 10 Gooses were cancelled with the end of the war.

From experience, I can easily surmise that the "1946" date on the current FAA registration for N1019N is predicated on the date of issuance of its very first civilian certificate of airworthiness, but that is not the same thing as its date of manufacture.

By that same token, N985R, s/n B-86, is currently listed as a "1951" model Goose, but that is even more ludicrous! It was actually built in Sept. 1944.

From May 1937 until August 1945, Grumman never built more than 6 or 7 Gooses in any one month. In some months none at all. Serial numbers ranged from 1001 up to 1200 and then started over again at B-1 through B-145. Interpolate accordingly....
