Albatross of Air Micronesia, Guam

Gents - a query on behalf of a fellow researcher.

Air Micronesia operated two Albatross, N9942F and N9944F, in the Trust Territories until retired circa the early '70s. By that time they had been transferred from USAF ownership back to the US Dept of Defense. '42F was canx from the US Register as 'destroyed' in Nov96 and '44F in 2012 as 'sale reported' (probably in a FAA cleaning up exercise).

Does any member know what actually happened to these aircraft in a 'physical' sense? - scrapped (if so where), used for spares, sold to other owners?

Any info gratefully received.

All I have is that 3 were transferred to Transocean Airlines (TALOA) in the Fall of 1955, N9942F, 43F and 44F.
They were the 9th, 11th and 20th SA-16As built (s/n 48-596, 598 and 603).
N9943F was supposed to have run onto a reef was was written off, the remaining 2 served with TALOA until the airline went under in 1960.
The contract went to Pan Am who operated them from 1960 to 1968 when they went to Air Micronesia.
What happens from there is, as your friend knows, very foggy.
According to what I have N9942F was abandoned on Guam and eventually scrapped, but I have nothing on the fate of N9944F other than what you already know.
I assume it too was abandoned somewhere in the Pacific and eventually scrapped.
I've found one image that shows N9944F sitting on it's tail with 42F hiding behind it, but upright, apparently taken on Guam after Air Mic. took over.

Thanks for that. If anyone can add more that would be great.

Best wishes to all.

Thanks George, that info fills in the blanks quite nicely.
