Macchi M-5 Isotta-Fraschini V4B Engine

Hello,

I build mainly wood models and recenly was given a very fine set of CAD drawn plans for a prototype model of a Macchi M-5 which I am going to build as a proof of concept for the elderly gentleman who did the CAD drawings. I'm trying to locate some good sources on both the airplane and the engine. I have Fighter Aircraft of the 1914-18 War by Lamberton and Cheeseman, Harleyford Pubs which has a nice page on the plane, a 3-view and some statistics but no close ups. I am in the process of acquiring the Windsock Data File on the M5 which I am sure will help a great deal.

As the engine sits talla nd proud up under the upper wing, its a big portion of the model and one I want to find out more about before I try to build a detialed version of it. So far I am coming up almost zero in my searches in engine books such as Victor Page's Modern Aviation Engines which I am lucky enough to own but which has no Isotta V4B in it. I've also looked in the early issue online of Flight Magazine postings which often had great engine details in it but so far no luck.

If any of you have any good details on the Macchi M5 or the Isotta v4B I would appreciate your assistance and advice. If any of you know of any restored or existing M5s I would like to know that as well. I did find one photo of a guy in the states who built one from scratch.

thanks

TASSE, thanks for the scan of the Macchi M5. I have the Windsock on order but have not gotten it yet.

In case there are others searching for information on odd engines to build them up in scale, here are two great resources with lots of photos and 3 views both in public domain and downloadable from Google Books under full view.

This one I just found: Airplane Engine Encyclopedia by Glenn Dale Angle. It ended up having one Isotta photo in it but has a ton of other stuff. About 575 pages.

Modern Aviation Engines - Design, Construction, Repair and Operation by Victor W (Wilfred) Page and there are several editions of it. I own in hardback only volume II but it is available also online. Lots of photos, cutaways and line drawings.

the last source is Flight and its online archives which, for example, when I was looking for a Green engine of about 1913-14 had a very nice article complete with photos of it. Incidentally the Encyclopedia above has line drawings of it.

Hi,

I'm looking for photo of the inside of Macchi M5.

There is only one in windsock datafile .

It seems that there is in windsock international N°6 Vol 6 ( Italian Warplane Special) but it is out of printed and I do not find it.

Somebody could scan me pictures which could interest me?

I'm finding two photos of "scratch building" macchi.

I do not know if information is reliable.

Here you're going to find a book about:

Motore Isotta Fraschini V4b is in progress.

Fraschini V4b:

And an other one with M5 pictures. It's a book about Macchi M5.

I think It will be a very interesting book (new drawings).
