Looking for info on the SARO Lerwick

Postby seawings » Sun Feb 11, 2018 7:22 am

Hi All,

I'm building the new 1/72 scale resin kit from Blackbird Models - it's a beauty - but i need to find more photos/drawings of the cockpit area.

I have a couple but there must be more 'out there' surely..?

It was a very large 'greenhouse' and so needs all the internal detail I can give it..!

Any help will be gratefully received.!

Cheers,
Best Regards,

Up-Date.....

Well, I must check my flying boat archive more...! I have the Manual on the Lerwick Mk.I with a complete selection of detailed images of the cockpit area together with numbered notes..! (Memo to self; I must get out more...!)

However, studying those 'all-round' images threw up an interesting question: how did the cockpit crew get down into the rest of the 'boat as there's no upper hatchway leading aft as there were on other 'boats.

The images quite clearly show a rear bulkhead - the cockpit aft wall - that is floor to ceiling with no hatch doorway so I presume that there must have been a floor-level opening with stairs/ladder to the lower deck.

Anyone got any pictures/details/drawing of that..?

...and Yes, I've checked the rest of my Lerwick references..!

Thanks, Chris.!

All I need now is a picture of the cockpit flooring!

Sometimes, life just isn't easy..!

I realize now that what I posted is just a poor copy of the image that's in the Lerwick manual, that's in SeaWings.

In my mind, I know I've seen a picture of the Lerwick cockpit somewhere. It may have been here on the forum, but like so many other forums, the Photobucket buggery and the early death of PhotoReflex has left a great deal of photoless voids.

OMG...!

Chris, that is GORGEOUS...! Thank you so much.

So, knowing what I know from the walk-around images in the manual, whomsoever took this shot was standing with their baclk pretty much up against the rear cockpit bulkhead.

Therefore, does that make that square section on the floor a 'hatch cover'...?

Albeit, it looks very small is overall length and width unless of course it continues beyong the photo edge limits at the bottom...? And, is that a 'piano-hinge' down the right-hand (Starboard) edge - the black line?? In which case, that just could be what I'm looking for......

I wonder if this chap took any more pictures while he was in there..??

And, what airframe is this one? The prototype...????

What a mystery......more questions than answers but Dogsbody I owe you a bone for this one, matey.

One of the great benefits of retirement is having the time to sit on me arse and trawl through GOOGLE. Last night, while watching the late news, I found this image. After looking at the site, I realized it was scans from that FlyPast issue. That's where I had seen it before. I dug it out this morning and scanned it, but I couldn't get as clear an image as the GOOGLE one. So I just enlarged it by 50% and here it is.

You don't owe my anything. As No.2 here on the forum, I feel it's my duty to help out any member if I can.
