Sunderland prototype 37mm COW fitting

Hi all, a friend posted this query on another forum and has yet to get an answer, can anyone help?

............................................

It's said that the prototype Sunderland was designed for a 37mm anti-submarine gun (I assume a Vickers COW).

Was this ever actually carried out? Does anyone have any photos or some idea of what this might have looked like on a Sunderland?

Here's a nifty video showing it attached and in use on the Blackburn Perth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdsBQjq7fJg

I've got a photo walk-round of the COW gun on display at the Royal Air Force Museum, if anyone is interested?

For the COW gun question - simple answer is yes.

I've seen some notes suggesting that it was proposed for the Sunderland but I'm not aware that it was ever fitted. I think the theory was that it was spare and might make a handy anti-submarine weapon. Assuming it could be made accurate.

I'm not sure that saying the prototype K4774 was "designed" for it is quite right though - that machine went through a number of variations to trial ideas. I'm away from my notes but I don't recall seeing anything about the COW gun being actually fitted.

Later in the war a cannon was tested on the prototype but it wasn't accurate enough to be put into production - recoil issues affected its ability to narrow the spread of shots to acceptable levels.
