I love those Felixstowe boats. Why were they in such brilliant color schemes?

In terms of the colour schemes chosen, there was a style of painting called 'disruptive camouflage' or 'dazzle_camouflage' in vogue at the time.

Instead of attempting to make the ship or aircraft blend in to the surroundings, the idea was to apply a paint scheme that would fool the observer into thinking that the machine was heading in a different direction, was a different size or shape, or exhibiting a different outline than reality.
