Longham Reservoir Model Flying Group

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Great news for flying boat and floatplane modellers in the south of England: we have a new flying site! Since 1 January 2012 permit holders have been able to fly at Longham Reservoir 2. This is a flooded gravel pit about 10 miles north of Bournemouth and four miles west of Bournemouth Airport, owned and managed by Semcorp Bournemouth Water Ltd (SBW). It has an on-site warden, toilets, a study centre for meetings and large car park. When there are no other users around (kayak and model boat clubs only at present) the flying location is only a short walk from the car park. The prevailing wind blows from the south west and is clean and smooth: there are some small marker buoys belonging to the model boat club that can be easily avoided. When the reservoir is being used by others, we may have to fly further along the north bank and this does involve a walk of between 300 – 400 metres.

Flying is open to electric powered models only, and only members of the Longham Reservoir Model Flying Group (LRMFG), part of the Christchurch and District Model Flying Club (CDMFC) are allowed to fly. Permits to fly are issued by CDFMC on application via the Club website http://www.cdmfc.org.

The land surrounding the reservoir, and the one to the north (Longham 1) are sensitive areas and in order to safeguard the continuing use of the reservoir for model flying, permit holders without at least a BMFA “A” certificate must be supervised by a qualified permit holder in order to ensure that they fly from the correct flying location and within the designated flying area.

We have an RC Groups thread here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1374571#post17149188 which is updated regularly by fliers.

The flying secretray is Mike Roach. You can get in touch via the CDMFC website contacts page or through this forum.
